About Kilims
Kilim is a very characteristic technique.
There’s no other kind of textile, which is reversible and exactly the same on both sides. Its structure is very dense. The threads of warp are all hidden inside and only woolen weft is visible. That’s why they have magnificent properties: they are durable, they don’t absorb a lot of dirt and in the end they are easy to vacuum. The proces of making a kilim takes dozens of hours of the experienced craftsman’s work. Up to now, there’s no technology, that could be able to replace human hands in this kind of technique.
And this is a reason why every kilim is so unique.
It’s emotionally charged from the very beginning; it brings the stories of places and people that stands behind its manufacturing. Then it goes to the new owner and continues a story.
What do we gain?
Kilim is a fully usable, reversible and very dense kind of textile, which improves the acoustics of any interior. It can be used as a wall decoration, but also as a space divider or a floor rug. This long-lived kind of textile can last dozens and even hundreds of years with the proper care. For production of Tartaruga’s kilims we use only high-quality materials, most of them come from recycling but sometimes we use also new raw wool from a sustainable sheep farm. By using a kilim technique, we can reduce our production waste almost to 0%. Waste from making one 100×150 cm kilim fits in one hand and is fully biodegradable.
All of our kilims come in short editions or are one-of-kind. They are signed with the names of designer and the maker and the serial number. Few of Tartaruga’s kilims are ready to ship but we’re also open to commissions.
